A man of the ward

Walter Burnett grew up in the former Cabrini Green Housing Complex and was elected to the 27th Ward in 1995.[1]

In a 2012 profile, the Chicago Reader stated, "Anyone who really wants to understand how Chicago works needs to understand Walter Burnett Jr."[2] He is a prolific fundraiser. His ward comprises both wealthy and poor neighborhoods and he receives a combination of small, individual contributions and donations from real estate developers, restaurants, and other politicians. Burnett also receives hefty donations from Chicago Professional Sports, Ltd. given that United Center is located in his ward.[3] He worked as a special assistant to Secretary of State Jesse White[4] whom he calls a mentor.[5]

He is closely allied with Rahm Emanuel but has sometimes shown a willingness to break with the mayor without costing himself much political capital.[6]
